Season 2005-06

With most of Europe willing them on, as well as almost 40,000 travelling fans at the Millennium Stadium, MUNSTER made it third time lucky in the 2006 final. For Anthony Foley, lifting the Heineken Cup was akin to having discovered the Holy Grail as his players put the heartbreak of being losing finalists in 2000 and 2002 firmly behind them.

As well as having the majority of the 74,534 crowd roaring them on under the closed roof of the Millennium Stadium, there was also a massive crowd in Limerick's O'Connell Street following the game on big screens.

Victories in San Sebastien over Sale Sharks and Bath Rugby saw Biarritz Olympique become the sixth French club to reach the Heineken Cup final, but tries from Trevor Halsted and a steal around the blindside by Man of the Match Peter Stringer undid them. Ronan O'Gara added 13 points with his trusty boot and Munster triumphed 23-19 on another red-letter day for Irish rugby.

Foley's men had reeled off eight straight wins after making a losing start and going down 27-13 at Sale Sharks on the opening weekend. They then won five pool matches in a row, beat Perpignan in the quarter-finals and destroyed Leinster 30-6 in a remarkable all-Ireland semi-final at Lansdowne Road.
